The Brandywine Valley is rife with wonderful wineries and small craft beer makers. But there is a new player in the field. Artillery Brewing Company is offering a whole new concept – Farm to Glass Beer. They have joined with the good folks at Thornbury Farm Market and CSA to grow hops and barley and make the beer and ale right next to the farm. Recipes are based on Belgian and German style ales.
At this time, Artillery Brewing Company is only selling its beers and ales at the single location of Thornbury Farm. Thornbury Farm has been in existence since 1709 and the house on the property was the first stone house in Pennsylvania. It was built with stone quarried right at the property. Buildings on the property were also used as stops for the Underground Railroad.
The farm sits on the site where the Battle of Brandywine was fought on September 11, 1777. This was the largest battle fought during the American Revolutionary war. Imagine sipping a cold glass of beer and gazing out at the countryside where George Washington and his troops fought. Either before or after visiting the farm and brewery, be sure to take a tour of the Brandywine Battlefield Park which is adjacent to them. Throughout the year the farm hosts various events so be sure to check their web site to read more about their history as well as learn what is coming up. The farm hosts history tours and ghost tours in the fall. You can arrange a tour of the farm and historic house by contacting Susie Spackman at email@example.com
While at the farm, you can purchase farm fresh produce, specialty items, jellies, condiments, and other goodies. They also have 100% hormone free meats, super extra virgin olive oil, local cheeses, and honey. Their olive oil won a gold medal in Europe for quality. For those of you with a sweet tooth, enjoy their ice cream. Daisy, the pet donkey, Fiona and Duncan the pigs, and Luna, the goat are waiting for you to stop by and pet them.
Right now Artillery Brewing is open Friday from 5-10, Saturday 12 – 10, and Sunday 12 – 8. The libations are sold by the pint and range in price from $6.50-8.00 per pint.
